On September 30, 2026, Amazon announced the new Fire TV Stick 4K, and it's not just a spec bump: it switches operating systems. Instead of Android-based Fire OS, it runs Vega OS, Amazon's new Linux-based system. Here's what matters.

What's new in the Fire TV Stick 4K (2026)

  • Vega OS: a lighter, faster system built for the interface and streaming apps.
  • Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3 for a more stable connection.
  • 4K at 60 fps with HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG, plus Dolby Atmos passthrough to your soundbar.
  • USB-C power straight from your TV, with no separate adapter needed on most TVs.
  • Redesigned remote: more comfortable, with TV power and volume buttons and a star button you can assign to your favorite app.
  • Alexa+, Amazon's new AI-powered assistant, with early access.
  • List price in the US: $59.99.

What to keep in mind

  • Android apps don't run directly. Since it leaves Fire OS behind, apps must be rebuilt for Vega OS. The big ones like Netflix, Prime Video, YouTube and Disney+ are there; some smaller apps may take time or never arrive.
  • Installing apps from outside Amazon's store is much more limited, so if you rely on apps like Kodi, this isn't your stick.
  • No Dolby Vision, only HDR10+.

Can you use it for cloud gaming?

Yes. Amazon lists Amazon Luna and Xbox Game Pass among its apps, with GeForce NOW announced as coming soon. That said, with 1 GB of RAM it's an entry-level device; for smooth gaming, a more powerful model is a better fit.

Our take

If you just watch Netflix, YouTube and Prime Video, the new model does the job. But if you want to play in the cloud with Xbox Cloud Gaming or Luna, use more apps or get Dolby Vision, the Fire TV Stick 4K Max is still the better pick: twice the memory, Wi-Fi 6E and Android app support.
